Abstract

The machining process using a milling machine is a machining process that is widely used in the manufacture of a product, however, each product that has undergone a machining process using a milling machine will produce a different product surface roughness value such as a smooth or rough surface. This study aims to determine the effect of variations in spindle rotation speed on the resulting vibration and the resulting vibration, as well as the optimal spindle rotation speed so that the roughness value on the product surface is small in the milling process. This research uses SS400 steel material. Using KNEE-TYPE 57-3C universal milling machine with 4 flutes flat end mill chisel. End milling surface incision with up cut milling infeed motion. Variation of spindle rotation speed of 178, 310 and 570 rpm. The depth of feed is 0.5 mm and the speed of feeding is 10.5 mm/min in the universal milling machine. From the results of the research, the largest vibration was 6.3 mm/s at a spindle rotation speed of 570 rpm with an infeeding speed of 10.5 mm/minute. While the lowest surface roughness is 1.907 µm occurs at a spindle rotation speed of 178 rpm with an infeeding speed of 10.5 mm/minute.
