Abstract

The use of alternative fuels to reduce fuel consumption for motorized vehicles needs to be sought. Ethanol is recommended to be used as an alternative fuel because it has advantages in its properties compared to other alternative fuels. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of varying the ignition coil on a 4 stroke 150cc 96% ethanol fueled motorcycle. The method used is changing the standard motorcycle compression ratio from 10.4:1 to 14.5:1, then testing power, torque, exhaust emissions and fuel consumption on motorcycles with standard coil, aftermarket coil 1 and aftermarket coil 2 The results obtained from this study are that at engine speed of 5000 to 8000 rpm, the use of aftermarket ignition coils produces greater power and torque, namely power up to 12.6 Hp or up 5% and torque up to 12.03 N.m or up 1.6 % compared to a standard ignition coil, and the exhaust emissions are also lower, namely CO up to 5.54% or down 11.4% and HC up to 547 ppm or down 65.2%. Meanwhile, the fuel consumption of the aftermarket ignition coil is greater than the standard ignition coil, which is 17 ml/30s or an increase of 48.3% at 5000 rpm, but tends to decrease at high speed, namely 25.73 ml/30s or a decrease of 4.2%. at 8000 rpm engine speed.
