Abstract

The coil has a function, among others, to change the low voltage from the battery (accu) to high voltage to produce sparks used to start the engine. The study aims to determine the effect of using coil variations on the performance of a 4-stroke motor, in this experiment, coil variations were replaced including standard coils, ground strap coils, and aftermarket coils at engine speeds of 5,000, 5,500, 6,000, 6,500, and 7,000 rpm using a dynotest. The effect of power on the standard coil variation has the highest power, namely 12.9 Hp at 7,000 rpm, 0.46% higher than the aftermarket coil and 1.7% for the ground strap coil. The effect of torque on the standard coil variation has the highest torque, namely 13.09 Nm at 7,000 rpm, 0.22% higher than the aftermarket coil and 1.68% for the ground strap coil. The effect of specific fuel consumption (sfc) on the standard coil variation has a more efficient sfc consumption of 0.0575 kg/Hp.h at 7,000 rpm engine speed while the highest sfc consumption is on the ground strap coil variation which is 8.14% more wasteful than the standard coil. With the conclusion that the standard coil has better power, torque, and sfc consumption among the aftermarket coil, and the ground strap coil so it is not recommended to replace the standard coil using an aftermarket coil, and the ground strap coil.
